Better Bikeways, San Jose

Project Background

The Better Bikeways project was a partnership between our firm and NACTO to develop innovative solutions using quick build materials. It involved a 14-mile expansion and 60 intersections in the central part of San Jose. The project features more than 20 fully protected intersections, more than the total in the entire United States at the time of construction.

In just 8 months, Crossroad Lab organized 14 public meetings with all the stakeholders and decision makers iand developed the entire PS&E Package for the network. During the delivery, construction went smoothly and under budget with enthusiastic community and political backing.

The Better BIkeways Project created a new precedent in the Bay Area with new standard details and best practices for intersections configurations, which can be replicated by engineers and planners in future projects.
